Will came to lung disease by way of structural pharmacology. He trained in the Medical Scientist Training Program at Vanderbilt University, where his doctoral work with Heidi Hamm addressed the mechanism by which receptors activate heterotrimeric G proteins. He moved to Boston for residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and for fellowship in the Harvard Combined Pulmonary and Critical Care program, where his clinical research used invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing to characterize unexplained exertional dyspnea. He began working on cell metabolism during a research fellowship with Joseph Loscalzo at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and started his own laboratory in 2015. He moved the laboratory to Brown University Health in June 2025, where he is an attending physician in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
